Occupy Congress – J17 Event

On January 17, 2012, thousands of Americans from across the nation converged on Washington for the calling of our time. We unified our voices using the People’s mic at the Capitol, we poured onto the steps of the Supreme Court and reminded them that without justice there can be no peace, and we went to the White House where we left paper hearts tied to the gate with our stories, our struggles, and our lives written on them. Our journey continues. Another world is possible.

For people who live in NEW ENGLAND: The best way to get to DC is by bus, which is very cheap. We have confirmation of many people coming from Boston. If you live in or near Hartford, CT, they are trying to plan a solidarity event at the state capitol. The same may happen in Providence, RI, too.

  • http://twitter.com/Re_Occupy Occupy Congress

For people who live in the SOUTH and SOUTH-CENTRAL: In most cases, the best way to get to DC is by bus. We have multiple groups coming to D.C. from all different parts of Florida, including Miami. Get in touch with your local occupation to see if they have people going. For those who live in Nashville, TN, there is a planned protest at the state capitol. For those who live in Texas, there may be a solidarity action in Austin. For those who live in New Mexico, there will be a protest in Albuquerque. For those living in NC, SC and VA, many people are busing to D.C.

  • http://twitter.com/Re_Occupy Occupy Congress

For people who live in the PLAINS or MIDWEST: We encourage you to bus in! We are trying to organize solidarity events with Occupy Caucuses in Des Moines, Iowa and Pierre, SD. Chicago may have a solidarity event too. Madison, WI (where they were the first to Occupy the Capitol) may have a solidarity event, too.

  • http://twitter.com/Re_Occupy Occupy Congress

For CANADIANS and EUROPEANS: We have buses from Quebec. And there are solidarity protests happening at Parliament on the days preceding #J17. In Europe, we have a solidarity event in Oslo, Norway, and a sister event in Spain a week after #J17. Solidarity protests in London, likely, too.

  • http://twitter.com/Re_Occupy Occupy Congress

For ANYONE not mentioned below: Please act in solidarity wherever you are. If you want to come to D.C. but can’t afford to, you can set up a “We Pay” account and we will Tweet out for supporters to help fund you.

You can also click the Occupy Bus link above and select CT, then New Haven or Hartford.

  • Debbie

The mega bus site does not have DC as a stop. Why?

    • http://twitter.com/Linda_RI Linda Perreault

They stop in DC. You may have to get a connect bus from your city so it won’t show you DC as being a stop. Click on a city that the bus in your town goes to and see if that one conncects to DC. I have to go Providence to NYC then NYC to DC. Sometimes, depending where you are it might be 3 stops.

This is an invitation for anyone planning to attend Occupy Congress. The PEOPLE’s Living History Project needs your voice. If you are attending and you like to journal please consider chronicling your experience in the Occupy Congress documentation thread at the PEOPLE’s Living History Project. – http://www.wearethedemocracy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=36&t=172

The PEOPLE’s Living History Project is a start-up effort, but so was Occupy not that long ago and look how things can grow when people see a need and get involved. History is unfolding beneath our very feet and WE the PEOPLE must do the work of chronicling our own history while the memories are still fresh and documentation is still easily accessed. You can read more about the PEOPLE’s Living History Project here: http://www.wearethedemocracy.com/forum/living_history.php

    • http://twitter.com/Re_Occupy Occupy Congress

The schedule of events will be posted by Monday. As of now, meet on West Front of US Capitol at 9AM. There will be MANY things happening that day.

coming from RHODE ISLAND. All info about places to park would be really awsome. if i take a train from penn station(nyc) what stop should i get off at in dc? and whats the best way to get to the capital from that station? plus people keep saying – park at the metro outside the city. Parking inside the city costs serious cash. can anyone shed some light one this for me im so excited for this

    • http://twitter.com/Re_Occupy Occupy Congress

Parking in D.C. is bad, try to park at a Metro station outside of D.C.’s downtown area. And union station is the best stop to get off… very close to Capitol building

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Curtis-Livingston/100000406581183 Curtis Livingston

if i look up metro station outside dc downtown area do you think ill find something?

        • Gwshockley

Greenbelt to Gallery Place, transfer to Red Line to Union Station. Done and Done.

        • http://twitter.com/Re_Occupy Occupy Congress

Yes, get off at Union Station. The Capitol is just a short walk from there. Many buses will be letting off protestors at Union Station too. For more on the Metro, just check their site: http://www.wmata.com

        • Derp

I would park around Friendship Heights, Bethesda, Tenleytown and than take the Red Line metro to Union Station – I live in DC.

  • TG

Are there any events scheduled for the days leading up to the 17th? I could only take that one day off, so I have to head out before the day is done on Tuesday, but I’d love to be a part of any gatherings that are happening on MLK day.

    • http://twitter.com/Re_Occupy Occupy Congress

Yeah there are some minor events happening. You should come out Monday night for the big OccupyDC/OccupyCongress inter-GA the night before #J17
